Brief History of GBHS Mbengwi

The Government Bilingual High School (GBHS) Mbengwi is a Bilingual Secondary and High school in Mbengwi, headquarters of Momo Division, Cameroon. It is located in mile 17 and has both Boarding and Day school sections. Students come from all over Cameroon (and even beyond) to attend GBHS Mbengwi.

The school was founded on the 8th of October 1973 by the Cameroonian government. The first principal of the school was Mr. DB TATA.  The school started with 92 students and a handful of teachers. However, the school quickly grew in popularity and soon became one of the most prestigious high schools in Cameroon.

Government Secondary School (G.S.S) Mbengwi was the first in the then North West Province. It started in the premises of the  pioneer Presbyterian Secondary School Mbengwi on September 8th  1973.

February 25, 1975 – Brief visit by *Hon. ST Muna*, President of the National Assembly.

June 7, 1976 –  First Academic Prize Award ceremony on campus presided by the then Minister of National Education, Mrs Dorothy Njeuma

June 1978 – Pioneer Batch of Form Five students graduated.

August 31, 1978 – A Prime Ministerial Order *No, 114/CAB/ PM* raised the status of the school to Government High School (GHS) Mbengwi

September 1978 – The 1st Batch of Sixth Form Students was admitted into the newly created high school section.

February 3, 1979 – Formation of the Parent Teacher Association ( PTA) of the school headed by S.D.O Sikod of Momo Division.

June 5, 1979 – Visit by His Excellency Adamou Ndam  Njoya, then Minister of National Education.

January 26, 1980 –  First pipe borne water project by the PTA.

April, 1981 – The then electricity Corporation SONEL extended lights to the campus.

March 3, 1982 –  Mr. Raymond Kouna,  then Director of Secondary General Education, accompanied  by the Assistant  Chief of Pedagogic Affairs in the Ministry of National Education, Mr. Meh Zang visited the school.

September 8,1983 -10th Anniversary of Government High School Mbengwi postponed to  16/12/83 which was respected.

It was among the first government high schools in Cameroon. Until 1996 GBHS Mbengwi was GHS (Government High School) Mbengwi. The name changed to GBHS in the late 1990s when a French-speaking section was added to the school.

GBHS Mbengwi has a long and proud history of academic excellence. The school has produced many successful graduates who have gone on to make significant contributions to Cameroonian society and the world at large. Some of the school’s notable alumni include: Minister FRU Jonathan, Gen. GANDO Mama, … e.t.c

The 50th anniversary celebrations of GBHS Mbengwi are a testament to the school’s long and distinguished history. The event is a chance to celebrate the school’s achievements and to look forward to its future, though in challenging circumstances.
